Brisbane maintains passenger growth through floods

Brisbane Airport has managed to achieve growth through the tumultuous start of the year, with passenger numbers up 1.1% in the domestic market over February.

Brisbane Airport Corporation spokesperson Rebecca Masci said the growth was encouraging considering the impact of the flood crisis.

“While the domestic market growth over the past couple of months has not been as substantial as July through December statistics, we are encouraged by the numbers which show the strength and resilience of Queensland as a region for tourism and business,” Ms Masci said.

March statistics are currently showing even better signs of recovery, with the forecast indicating over 5% growth in the domestic market by month end.

“The airlines should be commended for the commitment they have shown throughout these past couple of months to maintain flight frequency to flood affected regions, which has helped to expedite the recovery of tourism and business industries for these areas,” she said.

Ms Masci said in the international arena, the US inbound market is also making a comeback, up 1.1% over January and February.

“The increase in visitors from the US is potentially related to Oprah’s promotion of the region, and is a positive sign that international guests are receiving the message that Queensland is open and ready for business.”
