Bikeway extension opens at Brisbane Airport

Cyclists have celebrated the opening of an extension to the Moreton Bay Cycleway, improving access to Brisbane Airport.

The new 600-metre path, delivered by Brisbane City Council between Schneider Road and Viola Place, closes a key gap in the cycle network.

It makes it safer and easier to ride, walk or roll to and through Brisbane Airport, especially for people who ride from Brisbane’s southside via the Gateway Bridge.

The project includes:

• A 600-metre shared path (varying between 2.5 to 3 metres wide)
• Solar-powered lighting and fencing along the shared path
• replacing and relocating the weir which crosses over a water way
• Line marking, wayfinding signage, and landscaping

This project is jointly funded by Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program.

Dozens of cyclists attended a free pop-up coffee station along the path on its first morning of opening.

Around 25,000 people travel to Brisbane Airport each day for work, and that number is expected to grow by around 20,000 over the next 20 years.

Brisbane Airport’s draft 2026 Master Plan includes a number of initiatives over the next five years to boost active transport across the precinct, offering a lower-cost and healthier way for people to get to work.
