Brisbane Airport has secured Brisbane's first Costco warehouse, bringing one of the world's most recognisable retailers to a major new destination on the city's doorstep. 

Costco will occupy a 6.7-hectare site, featuring a 15,600m2 warehouse and fuel station and is set to open late 2029.  

It will be Costco's first location in Brisbane City and the fourth store in Queensland.  

Brisbane Airport is developing a new 51-hectare parcel of land, centrally located and directly opposite the International Terminal, covering an area more than three times the size of South Bank Parklands. 

Perimeter drainage works have started on the mammoth site. 

Road network improvements and upgrades will form part of this development and other surrounding future projects in the area.

Costco's arrival will mark a key chapter in transforming the location into a broad mixed-use precinct. 

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said Costco would be a popular drawcard for the new precinct. 

“Costco’s commitment marks the beginning of a new chapter for Brisbane Airport and is the first of many announcements to come as we bring to life a new mixed-use precinct for the city.  

“Costco is just the beginning. Even a retailer of this scale will occupy only 12% of this huge development site, leaving significant opportunities for other businesses to establish themselves alongside one of the world's most recognised retail brands.” 

Costco Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand Chris Tingman said the new Brisbane Airport warehouse is a strong vote of confidence in the area's growth, with an investment of over $145 million in retail development.

With over 900 sites worldwide and 15 other warehouses across the country, I am confident the community will benefit from the unique shopping experience Costco offers.

Malaysia Airlines has introduced its next-generation A330neo aircraft on Brisbane services, giving travellers a quieter, more comfortable journey between Brisbane and Kuala Lumpur.

Combined with increased flight frequency, the new aircraft will give Queensland travellers access to a world-class onboard experience while strengthening connections to Kuala Lumpur and beyond, including key markets such as South East Asia, India and Europe. 

Malaysia Airlines will increase from five to six flights per week from 16 August, before ramping up to daily services from 25 October.  

The A330neo will offer an enhanced passenger experience, with elevated cabin comfort and modern cabin features across economy and business seats.   

Like other next-generation aircraft joining Brisbane Airport's network, the A330neo delivers improved fuel efficiency and a quieter noise footprint during take-off and landing.  

The newly opened plane spotting area at Brisbane Airport, Fellowship Place, offers aviation enthusiasts a vantage point to catch a glimpse of the new Malaysia Airlines A330neo.

Brisbane Airport is now connected to 35 international destinations, welcoming a record 25 million passengers in 2025. 

The airport is currently investing $5 billion across the precinct over the next five years as part of the Future BNE transformation. 

Construction of Brisbane Airport’s Aeromedical Precinct has reached the halfway mark, bringing regional, remote and rural Queensland communities closer to critical medical and emergency services.

Brisbane Airport is delivering the $217 million construction project, with the Queensland Government investing $430 million into the precinct in operational costs over the next two decades as part of an ongoing partnership.

The mammoth precinct spans 700 metres, equivalent to the length of the Domestic Terminal, and will be Australia’s largest dedicated aeromedical facility.

More than 700 tonnes of steel, 2,500 piles and 300 tilt panels have been used across an 18,700m² footprint since construction began in 2025.

Located between Brisbane Airport’s parallel runways for quick access, the Aeromedical Precinct will be home to aircraft and resources for critical services by Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), LifeFlight, Retrieval Services Queensland (RSQ) and Queensland Police Service Aviation Capability Group.

Brisbane Airport’s 24/7 operations are vital to Queensland’s aeromedical network, providing unrestricted access for emergency medical flights day and night.

In the past year to June, a total of 7,207 patients from 60 regional, rural and remote Queensland communities were flown in and out of Brisbane Airport for care by the Royal Flying Doctor.

The Brisbane-based LifeFlight helicopter crew helped 603 people while the jets aided 405 people.

This once-in-a-generation aeromedical development will serve as a vital hub to connect the community with enhanced door-to-door medical evacuation services.

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said the Aeromedical Precinct reinforced Brisbane Airport’s role as a critical gateway for emergency medical services.

“In a state as vast as Queensland, aeromedical services play a vital role in keeping communities connected to healthcare, regardless of where they live,” he said.

“Behind every aeromedical flight is a patient, a family and a highly skilled team working against the clock. We’re proud to support these vital operations that save lives every day.

“This precinct located strategically between our runways is all about the people of Queensland and ensuring they have the connectivity to access vital healthcare and emergency services.”

Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls said the hub would serve the people of Queensland, in every corner of the state.

"The Crisafulli Government is committed to providing easier access to health care for all Queenslanders no matter where they live, and the new Aeromedical Precinct is a vital part of delivering that,” Minister Nicholls said.

The Aeromedical Precinct is due to be completed and operational next year.

Aeromedical Precinct features:

· Capacity for 26 aircraft and 17,800m² of tarmac parking.

· Patient transfer facilities to move patients between aircraft and ambulances.

· 18,700m² of hangar and administration space, equivalent to the size of King George Square.

· Medical base for regional patient and donor transfers.

· Parking for 450 staff and an onsite cafe.

· Targeting 5 Star Green Star accreditation and includes a 400kW solar system.

· Access to 24/7 operations at Brisbane Airport

The Aeromedical Precinct forms part of Future BNE, Brisbane Airport's $5 billion investment program over five years, building the capacity and capability needed to support Queensland's growth for decades to come.

Personal care items surrendered by international travellers are finding a second life helping Queenslanders experiencing hardship, thanks to a partnership between Brisbane Airport and not-for-profit organisation, GIVIT.

Every day, travellers pass through Brisbane Airport’s International Terminal and inadvertently attempt to go through security screening with powders, liquids, aerosols and gels exceeding the allowable limit for carry-on baggage.

In the past year to June, Brisbane Airport donated more than 15,600 personal care items, equivalent to 7.8 tonnes of products, to GIVIT.

GIVIT works with a network of local charities across Brisbane to ensure donated items, such as bodywash, conditioner, sunscreen, toothpaste and other unopened personal care items, reach people who genuinely need them.

Brisbane Airport Community Engagement Manager Portia Allison said the initiative provided practical support to Queenslanders, while reducing waste.

“If you've just said goodbye to a bottle of shampoo or tube of toothpaste at airport security, you’re not alone.

“Although it might be disappointing to leave these items behind, you can feel good knowing they don't end up in landfill.

“We take unopened items from security screening and give them a second chance, working with GIVIT to ensure the products go to Queenslanders who need it most.”

Brisbane Airport also donates other brand-new food products such as honey and vegemite to a range of charities that distribute to those in need.

GIVIT spokesperson Samantha Richardson said the toiletries from Brisbane Airport have been distributed to more than 25 charities across the city.

“GIVIT has been able to pass on these toiletries to crisis accommodation shelters, disability services and domestic and family violence charities who are in urgent need of essential goods for the people they support.

“Basic toiletries like deodorant or shampoo are essentials most of us take for granted but for many people they’re a luxury item. Having access to these personal care items means that someone experiencing hardship doesn’t have to make the choice between buying toiletries or putting food on the table.

“Our partnership with Brisbane Airport is a win-win, with these unused goods staying out of landfill while providing them to someone doing it really tough.”

Brisbane Airport’s partnership with GIVIT serves as a timely reminder for Australians travelling overseas to familiarise themselves with international carry-on baggage rules before arriving at the airport.

Packing items that comply with international carry-on requirements can help travellers move through security screening more quickly, while avoiding having to part with personal items.

Brisbane Airport has just completed a significant upgrade of security, installing next-generation screening technology, helping streamline the departure experience for international travellers.

A unique opportunity to ‘capture the first eyeballs for arriving and departing passengers in Brisbane’ is now available, with Brisbane Airport calling for expressions of interest to manage its on-airport advertising.

An exclusive whole‑of‑airport advertising concession will be issued to the successful operator for a new term from 1 April 2027.

With more than 25 million annual passengers through its terminals, Brisbane Airport offers a premium location for brands to engage business and leisure travellers, workers and visitors to the airport terminals and wider precinct via major arterial roads. 

Passenger numbers are projected to grow to 34.8 million by 2032, further strengthening the airport’s reach and advertising potential.

Brisbane Airport is Australia’s most connected domestic airport, with connections to 63 destinations, and 35 non-stop overseas locations.

The precincts advertising portfolio currently includes more than 90 assets spanning digital screens, large-format outdoor billboards, and high-visibility signage across the airport precinct.

As well as passengers, over 100,000 vehicles travel through the Brisbane Airport precinct each day.

Brisbane Airport will welcome Australia’s largest Area 51, with the indoor playground and all-ages attraction landing at Skygate next year.

The arrival of Area 51 will mark another step in Skygate’s transformation into one of Brisbane’s fastest growing shopping, entertainment and lifestyle destinations.

Spanning more than 7,000m2 the purpose-built facility will have the largest indoor Area 51 footprint to date, featuring giant play zones such as climbing arenas, trampolines, ninja-style obstacle courses, inflatables, sports court, high ropes, toddler-zone, in-house cafe and more.

The space will also cater for corporate events and birthday parties, as well as evening sessions for adults.

Area 51 Skygate is expected to open in late 2027, marking its seventh location in Queensland.

The final design concept for Area 51 Skygate is yet to be finalised, however is expected to feature the newest and most cutting-edge attractions and experiences on the market when it opens.

Brisbane Airport Executive General Manager Commercial Scott Norris said Area 51 complemented the growing mix of retail, dining and leisure experiences at Skygate.

Brisbane Airport has become Australia’s first major airport to trial the roll out a fleet of autonomous robot mowers, setting a new benchmark for automation, sustainability and innovation in airside operations. 

The robotic fleet operate with advanced navigation and safety systems. Sensors, geofencing and a physical barrier keep four mowers within prescribed safe areas.  

The pilot program is managing a growing portion of Brisbane Airport’s 919 hectares of airside land, equivalent to 54 South Bank Parklands. 

Replacing traditional diesel mowers with smart, automated technology will save more than 60,000 litres of diesel fuel per year, delivering a zero-emissions mowing operation powered by solar energy or through Brisbane Airport's renewables backed electrical network.  

Coverage into additional airside areas will be extended over time, as the fleet grows. 

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said the pilot program demonstrates how technology can deliver both operational and environmental benefits. 

“We’re always looking for smarter ways to operate, and these autonomous mowers help us improve efficiency while supporting our sustainability goals. 

“These robot mowers might be small, but their impact is significant. Unlike conventional mowing, which must be scheduled around air traffic and staff availability, these robotic mowers can operate day and night.  

“This reduces disruption to flights and the need for manual mowing, helping to maintain our airfield while keeping safety front and centre. 

“And because the grass is being mowed continuously, it’s actually creating greener grass by selectivity encouraging better species and allowing us to reduce the use of herbicides.”

Brisbane Airport’s long-term vision has been formally approved, with the Australian Government giving the green light to the Brisbane Airport Master Plan 2026. 

The approval by Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King sets the course for how Brisbane Airport will evolve over the next two decades to support a growing South East Queensland, strengthen global connectivity, and drive economic growth across the state. 

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff welcomed the approval, which followed a public consultation period and detailed consideration by the Minister. 

“The approval of the Brisbane Airport Master Plan 2026 by Minister Catherine King is an endorsement of our vision to serve the people of Brisbane, keeping them connected to each other and the world. 

“This Master Plan sets our 20-year vision for Brisbane Airport, enabling us to strengthen connectivity, boost Queensland tourism and trade, and support job creation for decades to come. 

“When a city grows, the airport must plan for that growth. This plan will ensure Brisbane Airport remains a world-class gateway, as we invest more than $5 billion, just in the next five years. 

“We continue to work with Airservices Australia, who design and manage Australia’s airspace, as we aim for a balanced approach that delivers essential aviation while minimising impacts on our community. 

“We thank our partners, stakeholders and the community who played a role in shaping the future of Brisbane Airport during the consultation period.” 

The Master Plan outlines how Brisbane Airport will evolve its land use to deliver everything from extra terminal capacity, more hotels, retail, entertainment and commercial spaces. 

It also plans for better transport access to handle a significant increase in passenger numbers, with capacity to handle more than 50 million passengers in two decades as the population of Brisbane and Queensland continues to grow. At the same time, the number of workers at the airport will double from 25,000 jobs to 50,000. 

The Master Plan also considers future technologies, including sustainable aviation fuels and emerging hydrogen and electric aircraft, as part of a shift to cleaner energy and more sustainable operations.

More than 2.3 million passengers are expected to pass through Brisbane Airport in the upcoming winter school holiday period, between Friday 19 June and Monday 20 July. 

Strong demand for international travel, particularly across the Tasman to New Zealand, is set to drive the holiday surge, with families looking for destinations closer to home. 

New Zealand remains Brisbane’s top two-way international market, drawing 1.34 million passengers annually in the 12 months to March 2026.* 

To support the increased demand, Jetstar’s inaugural flight to Queenstown will take off today from Brisbane, as part of a seasonal service during the winter months.  

Air New Zealand will also operate a seasonal service to Queenstown from 22 June, flying three times per week. 

Europe remains a highly sought after destination for outbound traffic, with Queenslanders continuing to head overseas in large numbers for a European summer.   

The United Kingdom and Europe are key markets for Brisbane, with 1.23 million annual passengers. Almost 1,000 Queenslanders travel to the United Kingdom and Europe daily from Brisbane Airport.* 

Emirates recommenced daily flights in May and Qatar has returned with four flights per week, which increased to daily flights from today.  China Eastern Airlines has also increased to daily flights from today, offering seamless connections to Europe.  

In the 12 months to March 2026, Brisbane Airport was ranked first for non-stop international seat capacity growth, outpacing both Sydney and Melbourne.*  

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff expects high demand these holidays, particularly at the International Terminal.  

“There is always a real sense of excitement in the terminals during school holidays and we’re looking forward to welcoming thousands of passengers who are travelling for a well-earned break.  

“New Zealand is proving incredibly popular with Queenslanders this winter, and there are still plenty of travellers heading away for a European summer too. 

"Inbound passengers are also flocking to Queensland for a dose of magnificent sunny winter weather, which is great for tourism operators across the state.

“Traffic around the terminals, parking, check-in, bag drop, our new security lanes and our shops will all be busier than usual, so arriving the normal 90 minutes before a domestic flight and three hours before an international remains important.” 

Brisbane Airport is now connected to 35 international destinations and 63 domestic destinations, welcomed a record 25 million passengers in 2025, and is investing $5 billion to transform its precinct over the next five years.

Brisbane has been announced as one of the first domestic routes from Australia’s newest airport, with flights between Brisbane and Western Sydney set to take off when the airport begins operations later this year. 

Jetstar will start flying from Western Sydney International Airport to Brisbane Airport three times a week from 26 October, providing western Sydney residents with another gateway into Queensland. All flights will be operated by Airbus A320 aircraft. 

Qantas will also launch its first domestic flights from Western Sydney Airport from 28 March 2027, with four flights per week to Brisbane on a QantasLink Embraer E190. 

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport opens on Sunday 25 October 2026. 

The estimated population of Greater Western Sydney is approximately 2.85 million people and is expected to grow to 3 million into the 2030s. 

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said the first flights from Western Sydney into Brisbane reinforced the strength and appeal of Brisbane’s market. 

“Western Sydney is home to millions of Australians and we’re proud to be among the first destinations connected to Australia's newest major airport.

Qantas Group Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Hudson welcomed the announcement. 

“This is a major milestone for Australian aviation and one that has been years in the making. We’re incredibly proud that Jetstar will be the first Australian airline to begin operations at Western Sydney International Airport and Qantas will follow early next year.

Brisbane Airport is Australia’s most connected domestic airport, now flying to 63 destinations, and 35 non-stop overseas destinations. Brisbane Airport is currently investing $5 billion over the next five years to transform Queensland’s premier gateway.

Brisbane Airport is marking a decade of direct connectivity to Canada, with Air Canada celebrating 10 years since the launch of non-stop flights between Brisbane and Vancouver. 

Since the inaugural flight touched down at Brisbane Airport on 3 June 2016, the route has carried more than 1.2 million passengers between the two destinations and become a vital link connecting Queensland with Canada and North America. 

More than 5,000 flights have been completed between Vancouver and Brisbane over the past decade, providing 1.4 million seats. 

Around 80 per cent of passengers travel for leisure or to visit friends and relatives, highlighting the route’s role in connecting families, travellers and communities across the Pacific. 

The service covers almost 12,000km in around 13.5 hours, providing seamless onward connections through Vancouver into major North American destinations including Toronto, Montreal and New York. 

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said the Brisbane-Vancouver flights had delivered benefits for all partners.

“For a decade, this route has brought Queensland and Canada closer together and opened even greater access across North America. 

“The strength of the service is connectivity on both sides of the Pacific, with Vancouver linking to more than 100 onward destinations, and Brisbane Airport offering arriving travellers Australia’s most connected domestic airport network. 

“Together, we’ve built an airbridge that connects families, fuels tourism, and strengthens trade and business ties between Queensland and Canada.” 

Air Canada Managing Director - International Sales, Rocky Lo agreed the milestone reflected strong demand and close ties between the two regions. 

“Brisbane-Vancouver has become one of the most popular routes on our international network, with Australians loving the seamless access to Canada’s west coast and beyond, and Canadians embracing Queensland as a year-round destination. 

“Brisbane Airport’s generous support over the past 10 years has been integral to the sustained success of the route and Air Canada is delighted to mark this milestone together.” 

Trade and Investment Queensland CEO Justin McGowan said the Brisbane–Vancouver service is an important gateway supporting trade, international education and tourism links between Queensland and Canada. 

“Canada is an increasingly important market for Queensland, with two-way trade reaching $2.9 billion in the year to March 2026, making Canada Queensland’s 14th largest trading partner and our 10th largest export destination,” Mr McGowan said. 

“The direct Brisbane–Vancouver connection helps strengthen commercial relationships, supports business travel and provides Queensland exporters with improved access to North American markets. 

“The route also plays an important role in international education and tourism. Queensland remains the most popular Australian study destination for Canadian students, attracting 1,583 enrolments, and around 72,000 Canadian visitors.” 

In 2016, Brisbane Airport celebrated the arrival of Air Canada’s first flight from Vancouver with a visit by a Canadian Mountie and First Nation Calgary Princess, with the International Terminal awash with red and white flags, maple leaves and a giant snow globe. 

Air Canada operates daily services aboard a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with the Brisbane-Vancouver route remaining Queensland’s only direct connection to Canada. 

To celebrate 10 years of direct Brisbane to Vancouver flights, Air Canada is offering 10% off popular routes for Brisbane Airport passengers.

Brisbane’s first service into Rarotonga has taken to the skies, unlocking a new South Pacific destination for Queenslanders to explore. 

The new Jetstar service will operate three times per week aboard a modern, quieter and fuel-efficient A321neo LR aircraft, offering Queenslanders a low-cost, non-stop connection to one of Polynesia’s most popular and picturesque island escapes.  

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said the new service reinforced Brisbane’s position as a key hub to the Pacific Islands.

Jetstar Executive Manager Customer and Digital Prue McKenzie said the new service gave customers even more opportunities to enjoy Jetstar’s low fares and expanding network. 

“Rarotonga is a stunning destination, and Queenslanders have jumped at the chance to reach this island paradise on this new direct service.

Cook Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown said the inaugural flight from Brisbane to Rarotonga was significant for the nation.  

“Having Jetstar flights from Sydney has been fantastic, but the addition of three flights per week from Brisbane makes it that much easier for Queenslanders and all our diaspora to reach our tropical paradise. 

“Tourism is the backbone of the Cook Island’s economy, contributing approximately 75 per cent of the country’s GDP.  This will provide a major boost to our tourism sector and the financial impact for local tourism operators and the nation will be very positive.

An uplift in domestic travel will see around 250,000 passengers travel through Brisbane from Thursday 14 May to Monday 18 May, with Friday forecast as the peak travel day. 

This includes a boost of 15,700 additional domestic passengers expected over the 5-day period.  

Brisbane Airport Head of Terminal Operations Stacey Pollard said the Domestic Terminal would be a hive of activity over the next few days.  

“Magic Round transforms Brisbane Airport into a sea of jerseys and excitement, and it’s great to see so many team colours from every club streaming off the aircraft. 

“We know when Brisbane Airport is busy, the city is thriving. We see fans from every corner of the country make the pilgrimage into Brisbane for Magic Round.  

“That includes strong interstate travel from Sydney and Melbourne, plenty of movement within Queensland across our regional network and of course a big contingent of Warriors fans coming over from New Zealand.

“Monday morning will also be a busy day at the Airport, with NRL fans heading home along with our usual FIFO and corporate travel starting their working week.  

“Don’t turn up five minutes before your flight and expect to make it. 

“We’re asking for all travellers, footy fans or not, to arrive the recommended 90 minutes before a domestic flight,” she said.  

The busiest day in history for the Domestic Terminal was 64,015 passengers on 6 October 2025, ahead of the NRL Grand Final.

Brisbane Airport has fast-tracked a new 25-hectare industrial precinct in response to soaring demand for well-connected logistics, supply chain and manufacturing space across South East Queensland. 

The second stage of Airport Industrial Park follows the complete sell-out of stage 1, with tenants including Australia Post, Martin Brower, Sadleirs, Tile One and 4WD Supacentre. 

Brisbane Airport will immediately move ahead with the development of the first lots, providing up to 10 premium tenants with opportunities across 27,000 square metres of lettable area. 

Brisbane Airport Executive General Manager Commercial Scott Norris said demand for well-located industrial land with direct access to the airport, major highways and the Port of Brisbane is expected to be strong. 

“These first two opportunities for large scale warehouse facilities range from 4,500sqm to 5,500sqm, and a mix of mid-size warehouses ranging from 1,400sqm to 2,200sqm. We’ll also be targeting 5 Star Green Star certification,” he said. 

“In addition to these opportunities, we’re offering the market flexibility to custom design and build facilities for a range of industries, in a precinct which continues to attract quality tenants who value connectivity."

Mr Norris said the launch of Brisbane Airport’s latest industrial offering forms part of a $5 billion investment program over the next five years, during which more than 150 Future BNE projects will be rolled out across the airport precinct. 

“Brisbane Airport is Australia’s most connected domestic hub and the third busiest airport in Australia,” Mr Norris said. 

“It’s a suburb in its own right, and while it’s best known for holiday departures, we’re also actively delivering one of the last premium industrial precincts of scale in South East Queensland, with airside access, 24/7 operations, and links to road, sea port and rail. 

“This investment will play a key role in keeping Queensland connected, with demand for supply chain, logistics and manufacturing facilities continuing to grow at levels we haven’t witnessed in more than a decade.” 

Mr Norris said that with significant land constraints across Australia’s eastern seaboard, the sites offer a rare opportunity for tenants to capitalise on Brisbane Airport’s scale, infrastructure, connectivity and employee amenity. 

“The aesthetic nature of industrial is changing, so making sure there are mixed-use elements for the people who work there – lifestyle elements, access to food and retail – is important for industry. 

“These sites offer customised development options with development support from start to finish, and workers are close to 170 shops and dining choices at Skygate, making it a convenient hub for logistics, business and industry. 

“Over the next three years, our in-house development team will release a further 30 hectares of purpose-built industrial capacity to market, tailored to meet the needs of businesses now and in the future.” 

Mr Norris said that as part of its commitment to future proofing, Brisbane Airport is prioritising 5 Star Green Star alignment through sustainable design elements in current and future industrial facilities. 
 

Four more food outlets are set to open mid-year, including crowd-favourite KFC, Mediterranean-inspired lobby bar concept Manna and healthy grab-and-go options from Liv Eat and Sushi Jiro kiosks.

McDonalds opened in December last year and continues to trade as one of their busiest locations in Queensland.

Still to come, brand new hub The Dining Precinct will bring together sweet treats from Gelatissimo and local bakery Jocelyn’s Provisions, gourmet sandwiches from Brisbane-born Joe’s Deli, the Deck Bar & Eatery, Coffee Trader as well as international flavours like Souva Greek Eats, Asian Street Kitchen and Sol Mexican Eats.

Brisbane coffee favourites Bellissimo, Merlo Cafe and Kuhl-Cher Cafe will also have outlets across the departures and arrivals levels.

All 13 outlets will be fully open by the end of 2027. 

New retail coming to International Terminal will include travel essentials from Relay, Prosegur Change Currency Exchange and the footprint of the existing Lotte Duty Free store will almost double as part of the transformation in coming years.  

Scott Norris, Executive General Manager Commercial at Brisbane Airport said the transformation marked one of the biggest overhauls of the terminal’s dining experience to date.

“This food and retail upgrade will create a terminal that feel unmistakenly like Brisbane; relaxed, welcoming and full of great food.

“We know travellers want to enjoy local flavours. The upgraded terminal will feature a mix of Brisbane bites and international favourites designed to make the pre-flight experience feel a little more like the holiday itself.

“We want to thank passengers for their continued patience as we work to transform the International Terminal. There’s already a buzz with these new food and drink outlets, and even more exciting options are just around the corner,” he said.

A section of the Village Green, located in the centre of Level 3 Departures Hall of the International Terminal, will be closed for staged ceiling replacement works until approximately mid-June. 

Passenger access to food outlets, charging stations, currency exchange and other facilities is still available, however there will be reduced waiting and seating room in this central area of the terminal.

Sixteen community organisations across Brisbane have received a boost through Brisbane Airport’s largest ever Community Giving Fund.

The 2026 round of funding was the largest one yet, with recipients receiving a share in $125,000, topping last year’s $100,000 to coincide with 100 years of Brisbane Airport.

The grant program provides financial support to help grassroots community organisations continue the important work they do across education, environment, health, and inclusive initiatives.  

This year’s expanded fund included a new community sport category to recognise the pivotal role local sporting clubs play in improving health and wellbeing within Brisbane communities.

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said Brisbane Airport played an active role in supporting local communities across Brisbane.

“By supporting community-led initiatives, we’re helping organisations deliver the services, programs and opportunities that matter most to those communities.

“It's about backing the people on the ground who know where the need is and empowering them to make a lasting difference.”

Brisbane Airport Community Engagement Manager Portia Allison said Brisbane Airport had received a diverse range of applications for this year’s funding.

“Our Community Giving Fund is about giving back where it counts,” she said.

“From youth programs to grassroots sport, there are organisations and groups across every corner of Brisbane delivering important work to support their local communities.

“Each recipient plays an important role in building a stronger, more-connected community and we’re proud to stand behind them.”

Recipients of this year's Community Giving Fund include:

Baby Give Back - Queensland charity with a mission to give children an equal start in life by providing material basics (like clothing and nappies) to vulnerable families. This grant will provide a co-contribution for Baby Give Back to reopen their Brisbane warehouse and update the fitout to hold more supplies.

Inspiring Brighter Futures Foundation – Delivery of an 8-week mentorship and engagement program for youth at risk of disengaging with school.

Flipside Circus - First Nations led program providing First Nations youth with access to professional mentorship and training in the creative arts, such as circus and acrobatics.

Variety Queensland - Delivery of a financial literacy education program to 10 special or high needs schools across Brisbane, reaching 250-300 students.

Sing Sing Sing Ltd - Queensland's first choir for people living with dementia and their carers, utilising the benefits of group singing to improve mental health and wellbeing.

Fiona Jackson from Sing Sing Sing said the funding will allow more Queenslanders to access their program.

“This is a game changer for us. There’s strong evidence that group singing can make a real difference for people living with dementia.”

Wynnum Manly Little Athletics Club spokesperson Jacki Rigby said all funding received will go directly into new equipment.

“With Gout Gout and Lachlan Kennedy recording incredible times in the news, athletics is hugely popular right now. We’ll be buying new javelins and covers for our long jump pits to support young athletes on the bayside.”

Since the launch of the Community Giving Fund in 2015, Brisbane Airport has donated more than $655,000 to help community groups and non-profit organisations that are working hard to make Brisbane a better place.  

Brisbane Airport gives back to the local community through a range of programs and partnerships including its annual Lost Property Auction, Community Giving Globes, Containers for Change recycling, as well as longstanding aeromedical support partnerships with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and LifeFlight.

Malaysia Airlines will further strengthen its presence in Australia by progressively increasing its Brisbane services, reflecting sustained demand and its disciplined approach to network expansion. The airline will operate six flights per week from 16 August, before ramping up to daily services from 25 October.

This increase builds on the successful resumption of the Brisbane route on 30 November 2025, which the airline currently operates five weekly non-stop services.

As part of its ongoing fleet modernisation, Malaysia Airlines will progressively deploy its latest-generation A330neo aircraft on the Brisbane route, offering Queensland travellers an elevated onboard experience with enhanced cabin comfort and contemporary cabin features. The additional services will also further strengthen Kuala Lumpur’s role as a key regional gateway, providing convenient access to Southeast Asia, Europe, India and beyond.

The airline also continues to expand its broader network, including the resumption of services to Fukuoka in Japan, alongside new services to key Chinese cities such as Shenzhen and Changsha. Together, these enhancements provide Queenslanders with greater choice and flexibility to explore North Asia and connected onwards to key destinations via Kuala Lumpur.

“Airlines are making strategic decisions about where to place capacity and Malaysia Airlines increasing Brisbane flights so soon after launch shows the confidence in our market.

“Brisbane continues to gain momentum as a resilient and fast-growing hub, and these additional services capitalise on the strong demand for travel by Queenslanders and visitors coming to explore Brisbane and beyond.

“We also look forward to welcoming the next-generation A330neo to our skies. This is exactly the kind of modern, quieter aviation future we want to see operating in Brisbane.”

Two rare hotel developments are on the drawing board for Brisbane Airport, with experienced hotel operators invited to submit proposals for hotel management agreement opportunities.

The dual opportunities will meet rising demand from business, leisure and event-driven travel ahead of the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.

Brisbane Airport is already home to three hotels, which are consistently at capacity.

The two new hotel sites will be architecturally designed with one located adjacent to the International Terminal, and a second at the fast-growing Skygate retail and entertainment precinct.

The proposed mid to upper level hotel will be the first to directly service the International Terminal and will be adjacent to a new multi-level carpark.

The second development at Skygate will provide a select service offering for a mid-level hotel. The proposed site will be positioned next to the existing DFO, expanded 16-hectare entertainment hub Lander’s Pocket and other speciality stores including Queensland’s only 24/7 Woolworths supermarket.

Brisbane Airport Executive General Manager Commercial Scott Norris said each location offered unique advantages for operators seeking to establish a presence at Brisbane Airport.

“Location is everything and it doesn’t get more connected than being at the front door of Queensland’s busiest gateway,” he said.

“Brisbane Airport’s three current airport hotels are consistently at capacity, so there is no doubt there is demand for additional hotel rooms.

“Long-term, Brisbane requires thousands of new hotel rooms ahead of the 2032 Olympics and so we’re highly confident the airport can support five hotels.

Fast-growing outdoor and camping retailer 4WD Supacentre is set to relocate its operations to Brisbane Airport, completing the first stage of the Airport Industrial Park.

The new purpose-built facility will occupy a 47,071m2 site in Airport Industrial Park and will provide up to 1,000 jobs onsite during construction.

Construction of the 20,000m2 warehouse will start in May, with the development targeting 5 Star Green Star alignment through sustainable design elements such as 350kw solar, rainwater harvesting for toilet flushing and irrigation, water efficient fixtures and fittings, and translucent sheeting to the warehouse roof to maximise natural light into the building.

4WD Supacentre is the final tenant to secure space in Stage One, with leasing now underway for the 25 hectare second stage of Airport Industrial Park.

Brisbane Airport Executive General Manager Commercial Scott Norris said Airport Industrial Park offered exceptional opportunities for warehouse, logistics, and manufacturing.

Security footage of incidents across the terminals shows simple behavioural changes can help avoid injuries and incidents.  

With 30% of all airport injuries occurring on escalators and travelators, passengers with bulky baggage are encouraged to make use of lifts instead of travelators or escalators, especially if mobility is a concern.

“Suitcases do a great job of carrying luggage, not people, and their misuse can quickly turn into a serious safety risk,” says Brisbane Airport Head of Safety Peter Dorn. 

“When children ride on suitcases, their high centre of gravity combined with small wheels makes them unstable and prone to tipping over. This has resulted in children hitting the tile floor and being injured.   

“We understand parents are juggling a lot when heading for a flight but using luggage to transport children is unsafe.”  

Surveillance footage also highlights preventable injuries involving older travellers, particularly those attempting to manage bulky luggage on escalators. These situations can lead to loss of balance, falls, and strain-related injuries.  

“Easter is one of the busiest travel periods at Brisbane Airport, with more than a million people on the move across the holiday period. We want to equip parents, carers, and all travellers with the knowledge and tools they need to make safe choices as they move through the airport.    

 “Despite the number of passengers growing year on year, accidents involving the public declined in 2024 and 2025, and we’d like to see it even lower, so everyone gets safely to their destination.”   

 Brisbane Airport welcomed 25 million passengers in 2025, with 187 public injuries reported, most of them minor, requiring first aid treatment for issues like bumps or scratches.   

 Brisbane Airport Head of Safety Peter Dorn said many airport accidents are linked to traveler distraction.  

 “People often experience ‘airport brain’,” he said.  

 “They’re thinking about flights, tickets, passports, and whether they’ve locked up the house.   

 “Brisbane Airport is a safe place, but we want to make it even safer.”  

 Kidsafe Queensland CEO Susan Teerds joined Brisbane Airport in calling on parents to ensure kids travel through the airport in a safe manner.  

“By taking a little extra care and keeping an eye on children, everyone can help make their journey through the airport safer and smoother.  

“Keep your eyes on your kids and within arm's reach. Particularly around equipment like baggage carousels and escalators.”  

Top tips to stay safe at Brisbane Airport:  

• Do not place children or babies on suitcases to transport them
• Passengers with heavy bags are best to use lifts
• Use handrails when using escalators or travelators
• Supervise children closely and avoid play around baggage carousels, trolleys and other airport equipment
• Follow safety signage through terminals
• Follow approved pedestrian paths through car parks, and don’t exit under boom gates   
• Allow plenty of time to reduce the need to rush through busy areas.

Brisbane Airport’s Skygate Centre is set to transform into Brisbane’s newest family fun hub with the arrival of live-entertainment giant Fever and its first pop-up Dinos Alive: An Immersive Experience next month.  

Its first experience Dinos Alive will feature more than 80 towering animatronic dinosaurs, including the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, and the small but ferocious Velociraptor, as well as sea giants in a unique virtual aquarium. 

Budding palaeontologists can dig for fossils and learn about Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods through a VR experience. 

The larger-than-life exhibition is the first of many new entertainment offerings coming to Skygate this year, as the precinct continues to evolve beyond a dining and retail destination into an expanded entertainment hub for locals and visitors to Brisbane.

Mainland China’s second‑largest carrier will now operate daily year‑round services from Shanghai to Brisbane, with China Eastern Airlines increasing capacity from 15 June 2026. 

The permanent move from 5 flights per week to 7 will deliver an annual capacity of almost 100,000 seats between Shanghai and Brisbane. 

The route connects Queensland directly with one of the world’s largest hubs, offering seamless connections to 244 destinations from Shanghai including other Chinese cities, Asia, Europe and North America. 

Shanghai also serves as a vital economic gateway for mainland China, with the increased capacity supporting trade and investment opportunities between Queensland and China. 

Visitors from China remain Brisbane Airport’s third largest inbound international market. Passengers travelling on Chinese passports rose by 19% to 315,000 annual passengers in 2025. 

Brisbane Airport CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said China Eastern Airlines increased frequency reinforced Brisbane's reputation as a globally connected gateway to Australia for Asian travellers. 

“Chinese visitors are an important market for Brisbane and they’re also among the highest spenders. Daily flights will give Chinese visitors the confidence and convenience to choose Queensland first and discover our beaches, wildlife, food and lifestyle. 

“The boost in capacity will also help deepen business, cultural and trade ties with China, boosting export capacity on the route. 

“China Eastern Airlines’ daily flights will also give Queenslanders seamless access to China’s vast domestic network and beyond. 

“Australians can now enjoy a taste of China on their travels with visa-free stopovers up to 30 days to savour Shanghai’s soup dumplings and pork buns, embark on a shopping spree on Nanjing Road and marvel at the famous light displays at The Bund.” 

Minister for the Environment and Tourism Andrew Powell said the year-round-daily flights would take Queensland tourism to new heights. 

“Queensland is the home of the holiday, and more direct flights mean even more visitors can experience our world‑class destinations,” Minister Powell said. 

“Daily year‑round services from Shanghai will welcome thousands of additional travellers, supporting our tourism operators right across the state. 

“Every new flight into Queensland delivers a boost to our economy, strengthening local businesses, creating jobs, and ensuring our visitor industry continues to thrive.” 

The increased capacity is supported by the Queensland Government and Brisbane Airport through the Connecting Queensland Fund. 

China Eastern General Manager Brisbane Cathy Huang said the capacity increase would help facilitate connection between Australia and China. 

“As China Eastern Airlines continues to increase its flight frequency on the Brisbane route, economic cooperation and connectivity between China and Australia will become even closer, paving a more efficient and convenient air corridor for business travel, cultural exchanges, and tourism.

“Seizing this strategic opportunity, China Eastern Airlines will further strengthen its role as an ‘air bridge’ facilitating two-way exchanges between China and Australia, contributing to the advancement of bilateral economic cooperation, cultural engagement, and family visit travel.” 

More than 25 million passengers are expected through Brisbane Airport this year. 

Brisbane Airport is now connected to 35 international destinations. 

 

A home improvement mecca the size of three Olympic-sized swimming pools is coming to Brisbane Airport’s Skygate precinct, bringing together thousands of building products under one roof to create a megastore for renovation projects and residential and commercial builds. 

The Build and Design Centre will relocate from its existing tenancy in South Brisbane to the airport precinct in a major expansion step, growing its showroom footprint. 

Spanning more than 4,000m2 across two levels, the purpose-built facility will be a one-stop shop for renovations and new builds, offering everything from kitchen and bathroom fixtures, cabinetry and benchtops, cladding, concrete, bricks, flooring and more. 

The walk-through experience will allow customers to explore display rooms and envision how each space could come to life in their own home. 

The new premises will feature: 

• More than 70 showrooms in one centralised space, allowing customers to browse, plan and coordinate an entire project with ease 

• Huge mix of leading home and building brands across interiors, exteriors and structural essentials 

• Easy access and ample parking within the established Skygate precinct, which includes DFO Brisbane and the newly opened Landers Pocket, with public transport links via bus 

• Purpose-built spaces for design seminars and workshops for industry professionals.
