Brisbane Airport welcomes Australia’s most sustainable data centre
Premier Anna Bligh today opened Australia’s most energy efficient data centre at Brisbane Airport, signaling a new era of sustainability in built design.
With one of the lowest energy efficiency ratings in Australia, the new $44 million iseek Data Centre (iseek DC) sets a new industry standard for next-generation green data centres in Australia.
The iseek DC measures 1.3 using the PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) benchmark developed by The Green Grid, a global consortium that recommends a maximum 1.5 PUE rating for data centres.
Brisbane Airport Corporation Pty Limited (BAC) CEO and Managing Director Julieanne Alroe welcomed the centre which will change the way companies host their mission critical IT systems, providing a new standard of security, power efficiency, capacity, connectivity and support as the State’s first Enterprise-Class facility.
“Information is the new currency, and its storage and management is one of the new challenges we face in the world today,” Ms Alroe said.
“As IT operations become a more complex and crucial aspect of most organisations, the need for more powerful, reliable and energy efficient infrastructure to support non-stop IT systems has become critical. Information today needs to be housed centrally, on a location that has the necessary capacity, space, infrastructure and access.
“A 24-hour facility like this is ideally located in Brisbane’s 24-hour airport precinct, which can ensure 24/7 operation and standby onsite emergency response. We already have some of the most modern IT infrastructure, with 10 gigabytes of network capacity, which is of world standard, and which adds to Brisbane Airport’s attractiveness as a modern, efficient, secure and safe business environment.” she said.
Purpose built by iseek Communications, the iseek DC is Queensland’s highest capacity data centre, capable transferring the equivalent of 10 full sets of the Encyclopaedia Britannica in and out of the facility every second.
iseek Communications Managing Director, Jason Gomersall, said the facility provided ground breaking innovations in data centre design and development, whilst meeting the exacting requirements of corporate and Government clients.
“The purpose-built iseek DC provides customers with state-of-the-art facilities including 24 hour on-site monitored security, purpose-built staging areas, high density technologies, loading bay, efficient cooling systems and a fully redundant fibre network,” he said.
The iseek DC joins over 420 other businesses currently located on Brisbane Airport, benefiting from proximity to major new road networks, 24-hour operations and staff amenities such as child care, retail, a Woolworths, cafés, bars, restaurants, and just recently a new gym and medical centre.
