Brisbane Airport announces shortlist for airport design competition
Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) is pleased to announce three parties have been shortlisted for the national design competition for Brisbane Airport’s first Property Master Plan.
ARM/Arkhefield, Grimshaw/AEOCM/PWC/Tract and Shane Thompson Architects/Wilkinson Eyre/Lat27 will progress to the detailed design phase over a six week period commencing 10 June.
CEO and Managing Director of Brisbane Airport, Julieanne Alroe, said 29 high quality submissions were received from across Australia during the Expression of Interest period.
“We received a large number of submissions, with strong representation from local firms, while others partnered with large international firms to provide depth to their submissions. The high quality of these submissions has ensured congratulations for the shortlisted parties are well-deserved,” Ms Alroe said.
“The competition has attracted incredible talent, who are offering more than just good design. The submissions are supported by expertise in planning, commercial development and transport infrastructure, ensuring the competition will provide exciting outcomes for Brisbane Airport and its surrounding region,” she said.
The winner of the airport design competition will be announced in early August this year.
The winning team will work with BAC to develop a detailed Property Master Plan between August and December 2011 for the 1000 hectares of developable land at Brisbane Airport.
The Property Master Plan will complement the existing Brisbane Airport 2009 Master Plan, and is intended to meet the needs of the existing and future property markets including the rapidly expanding Mining and Resource sector.
Ms Alroe said the Brisbane Airport design competition follows the Airport Atelier, held in April this year, and both are intended to encourage a partnered approach to future airport design, with input from local and state government, as well as Brisbane’s most well respected architects, town planners and urban designers.
“The design competition will continue the partnership momentum generated through the Atelier to deliver a property vision for Brisbane Airport, which better connects the airport to its city through physical infrastructure, urban design, and community,” she said.
These initiatives align with the success of the Brisbane Airport Area Round Table (BAART); a planning group comprising planning representatives from all levels of government who meet quarterly to collaborate on planning and development issues for the airport region.
“Through the BAART we have already seen how our developments and plans are more effective when they are completed in a way that complements the planning of our surrounding region which is designed by BCC and the State Government. Following BAART and the Atelier, I see similar potential for this design competition to create positive partnerships that deliver the best possible community and economic outcomes for Brisbane and Queensland as a whole,” Ms Alroe said.
