BNE Public Pick-Up Waiting Area update

Following useful feedback from travellers, Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) is making some additions to the recently opened Public Pick-up Waiting Area at the Domestic Terminal.

“We’ve received lots of constructive feedback and this has allowed us to consider improvements to assist travellers, including the addition of a Flight Information Display Screen (FIDS), a water fountain and additional seating in the Public Pick-up Waiting Area to be installed over the next few weeks,” BAC CEO and Managing Director Julieanne Alroe said.

“Our traffic management specialists are also assessing the flow of traffic through the Public Pick-up Waiting Area to see if we can improve efficiencies during peak times,” she said.

The new Public Pick-up Waiting Area allows drivers 20 minutes free parking while they wait to collect their arriving passengers.

Before it opened, there was nowhere at the terminal drivers could stop for free for longer than two minutes.

“This new waiting area was specifically designed for drivers to park and wait for their passengers instead of circling the terminal roads, and that’s exactly what we advise drivers to do, park in the Public Pick-up Waiting Area and wait for their passengers to meet them there,” Ms Alroe said.

The opening of the Public Pick-up Waiting Area has considerably decreased traffic congestion on the Departures/Drop-off Road taking approximately 500 cars per hour off the terminal road during peak times.

“The new Public Pick-up Waiting Area has achieved our objective of decreasing traffic on the terminal road especially during peak times so that departing passengers, who are the most time sensitive, are no longer delayed by traffic bottlenecks and are able to be dropped-off quickly and easily,” Ms Alroe said.

BAC would also like to remind travellers and those collecting passengers with mobility limitations (including disabilities, injuries and illnesses that affect mobility, as well as the elderly who have limited or compromised mobility) that they are still able to use the Departures/Drop-off Road for pick-up.

“It’s been a big change for many and most of the feedback we’ve received has been about concern with regards to access for those with mobility limitations,” Ms Alroe said.

“We cannot emphasise strongly enough that passengers with mobility limitations and those collecting passengers with mobility limitations should continue to use the Departures/Drop-off Road for pick-up where there is a number of ‘accessible parking’ bays allowing drivers 30 minutes to park, enter the terminal and assist mobility impaired passengers,” she said.

If drivers do not have a disability parking permit visible in their car, they can still use these parking bays but they must speak to the Kerbside Officer before leaving their car and explain that they are collecting a passenger who has limited mobility. If they have not spoken to an officer before they leave the vehicle, it may be towed for security reasons.
