BAC reaches out to local schools

Brisbane Airport Corporation Pty Limited (BAC) CEO and Managing Director Julieanne Alroe became a school principal for a day today at Hendra State School, in support of the State Government Education Week celebrations.

Ms Alroe said BAC wanted to provide an avenue for primary schools and their students to gain exposure and interact with the airport, while also providing them with a more in-depth understanding Brisbane Airport’s role, which forms a major focus of their local community.

“Brisbane Airport is largely involved with our local community. We make it our purpose to engage with the community on topics of airport operations and developments, so that people can better understand why we operate the way we do,” Ms Alroe said.

“But it is not enough to be one-sided, only talking with the community about the airport’s interests – we must also be attentive to the community’s interests to truly engage for the relationship to be two-way.

“Our children are the future of our communities. The Principal for a Day program enables the two-way relationship, providing BAC with an opportunity to better understand the interests and needs of the children and families living in our nearest suburbs, while also providing them with an avenue to learn about the airport, which forms a major focus of their local community,” she said.

This program compliments BAC’s larger community engagement program implemented over the past year, which sees senior managers and airport staff meeting with the community through a number of initiatives including: working groups, airport community forums and information sessions, school tour programs, local fairs and festivals, community group meetings, as well as a variety of sponsored partnerships such as the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

Principal for a Day is being held across Queensland, and involves more than 80 businesses with CEOs shadowing a principal during a regular school day to gain an insight into the daily operation of state schools, while also enabling school communities to interact with important role models.
