Art with Altitude set to soar

Brisbane Airport’s Art with Altitude is set to transform Airport Village into a vibrant, open air exhibition space from 24 August to 2 September 2012, with a program too big for any traditional art gallery.

As well as giant art installations, the contemporary art festival includes free children’s theatre, art workshops and live music that will take your senses to new heights.

The 10-day festival showcases some of Australia’s best artists: Nichole Voevodin-Cash, Keg De Souza, Sue-Ching Lascelles, Michael Candy, Inkahoots and Girringun Aboriginal Art Centre, curated by internationally renowned Urban Art Projects.

Amongst the installations, festival-goers can explore Keg de Souza’s inflatable portals, marvel at Sue-Ching Lascelles’ complex interwoven canopy of colour and relax on Nicole Voevodin-Cash’s I-Land Mounges whilst soaking up the festival atmosphere and watching planes go by.

Visitors can stand with Girringun’s striking 2.4m high Bagus and learn about the Indigenous rainforest culture and stories from North Queensland and rewrite Australian anthems via text with Inkahoots’ New Anthems V interactive lighting installation.

BAC Chief Executive Officer, Julieanne Alroe, said the festival is an extension of Brisbane Airport’s commitment to public art.

“Art with Altitude is an exciting opportunity to share our passion for public art with the community and support talented emerging artists,” she said.

“The festival celebrates Brisbane Airport’s role as the creative gateway to Queensland by inviting Brisbane to explore and be inspired by the best that contemporary art has to offer,” she said.

Brisbane Airport’s collection of permanent public art will also be showcased during the festival at Airport Village including works from Dennis Nona, Ned Kahn and Lena Yarinkura.

The festival’s exciting weekend entertainment program adds to adventure with performance art and music – all free for families to enjoy.

Full of inspiration from the art installations, children can then create their own works of art at the In-flight airplane making workshops by artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan.

The workshop is based on their major art work In-flight (Project: Another Country) 2009, presented at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art during ‘The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art’ exhibition in 2009-10.

Free weekend theatre performances include Queensland Theatre Company and QPAC’s Stradbroke Dreamtime and Grin and Tonic’s micro-magical tale Warning: small parts.

Roving performances from Flipside Circus and live music from local Brisbane bands will add extra festival fun on the weekends.
