A statement from Brisbane Airport

Yesterday Brisbane Airport was asked at a Senate Inquiry into aircraft noise if the number of overnight flights was projected to grow by “five times” by 2042.  This is not the case.

Our team committed to providing a response to the Senate Inquiry in our supplementary submission.

In the interest of keeping our community informed, we wanted to clarify this figure today.

Currently there are approximately 48 overnight movements at Brisbane Airport between 10pm and 6am (for example 24 take-offs and 24 landings.)  Since the opening of the new runway, two-thirds of overnight flights have operated over Moreton Bay.

By 2042, we are forecasting 80 overnight movements, not 240 as raised in the inquiry.  The figure is in line with Brisbane’s population growth, which is what drives increased demand for flights.

The figure of 240 which was mentioned in the inquiry was the number of flights per day that would be impacted by both a curfew and a daily movement cap of 45 flights per hour.

Brisbane Airport will be providing this information in a supplementary submission to the inquiry on the Impact and mitigation of aircraft noise, which will be available on the Parliament of Australia website after 30 April.
